Streets of India, a happy place between extreme poverty

From Varanasi we went to New Delhi, 12 hours away on the night train. There we contacted Pablo and Rebecca of Streets of India. One of the projects of this NGO, is dedicated in CNI Shishu Sangopan Griha, is a day center from which women are trained, through their participation in different workshops, and school reinforcement is given to boys and girls between the ages of 2 and 10 years, avoiding school dropout and giving family support.

Some neighborhoods in Delhi are made up of huts built with waste materials, and their people live in conditions of extreme poverty. The hygienic conditions and the resources of feeding are not appropriate, and less for the children who grow up in this environment.

IMG_8151

In this afternoon center they develop in an adequate and safe environment, learning healthy routines, performing school tasks and many other educational activities. They also give sewing and aesthetic professional training to girls and women who had to leave school prematurely.

IMG_20171208_141422

This education allows them to develop as people in a safe environment and to be able to choose a profession that would change their life radically.

IMG_8132

Through WhatsApp we stayed with Rebeca to do the workshop the next day. So we went there. The extra-school center was taught to us by Mrs. Vadana, its director, and Tatiana and Jeni, two Barcelona female travelers who had been visiting the school the day before.

IMG_20171201_135914

That day the lottery came to Mayra, who caught a horse gastroenteritis … with fever and a decomposition in repetition … So, due to the reduction of energy, we were left to do only the performance, and not force the machine with the workshop.

We prepare a large, empty room on the second floor, perfect for the show.

IMG_8159

IMG_8175

We prepared some fine mattresses for the children to sit on, put the bench and explained to Jeni the changes in music … our improvised sound technician.

IMG_8157

We went to prepare a room across the hall, while little by little the younger children were entering the room.

IMG_8147

IMG_8160

IMG_8199

In the end, we had about 15 children, ready to start … The entrance already exalted them, they got up and piled up in the front row … they were thirsty for play, and we gave them, we created twice as many impromptu interventions, they were delighted to go on stage, they crowded to participate …

IMG_8195

The games followed each other, and they loved to laugh. At the end, they would not let us out, they wanted more history, they wanted to know how it continued …

IMG_8162

So we solved it by tickling and playing catch pilla … Endless laughter … Everyone was delighted, even the director Mrs. Vadana who praised the delicacy of the show.

IMG_20171201_161904

The next day that we went to school was the following week, a Friday. We had agreed to do a workshop for the older children, between 10 and 14 years old. We made it in the same room as the show, wide enough.

IMG_20171208_165039

They came about 20 boys and girls, a high number, and all were excited and motivated to start the clown workshop !!!! At the beginning, as usual, we were all upset, making jokes, distracted, but little by little and insisting we got everyone to be part of the group, willing and attentive to our games.

IMG_20171208_163543

The activities surprised them, they loved them, they challenged each other to do better … It was a workshop taste, shy at first and crazy at the end, they had a great time, and they let us know.

IMG_20171208_163441

IMG_20171208_165916

In the end we had to stop because we ran out of time, although they were still piled up with hands raised to be the next ones to volunteer …

IMG_20171208_173622

And we said goodbye to a great experience, with loving children who appreciated the activities that we brought them with immense smiles and games, shared them and gave everything to get the most out of this experience. A hug and we wish you the best !!!!

Baan Dek Foundation, Chiang Mai

Baan Dek Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to facilitating access to education, personal hygiene and a safe environment to part of the large number of children living in Chiang Mai, who come from minority ethnic groups in conditions of poverty. They do not have much the opportunities to access basic conditions to set a future with minimums, so this organisation tries to provide as much as they can to them.

BDF logo

It is a very serious organization that follows international standards, for example before carrying out any task they made us sign a child protection contract, ruled by international standards, in which, among others, we were prohibited from taking any photo or recording video of any child, the photographs were provided by them to assure the suitability of them.

The person in charge of helping us was Mon, a nice and dedicated Thai woman who made everything very easy for us. We arrived early, at 9 am, and the children were arriving gradually. Mon showed us the facilities and explained us a little what they do, teaching functions, daycare for the little ones. In many cases children take care of their younger brothers while their parents work, so there is a little girl 6 years old taking care all the day of her little brother of 3 years old… Among other initiatives we were amused by a system in which thay earn points as superhero: Superheroes Academy, to encourage children to maintain personal hygiene by giving them superpowers … very cool!!!!

Mon

The workshops were carried out in the following way: There were about 50 children, divided into 4 groups, each group was in a station for 40 minutes, after this time there were rotating, until all the groups had passed through all the stations. We were responsible for station number 4. So we had 40 minutes to introduce about 14 children in the world of Clown… There was not time to lose, first the inevitable warming-up, Mon was translating us, but not only verbally, she was also doing representations,  exaggerating our movements… so motivated!! it was a pleasure, she is such a lovely woman.

Theater-4Theater-16Theater-2

The rest of the workshop was a joy for the children, they did not stop laughing and playing in each exercise. Until the time was up, the children stood watching us waiting for us to continue… but it was time for the next group… For one moment, sweating for the effort, we had the feeling of being in the groundhog day, and the morning was going to be very long … but we were so wrong! Each group was equally delivered and different nuances, they even approached to repeat children of other groups, and thanks to Mon who at no time stopped giving everything!

Theater-3Theater-6

After being with the 4 groups, we were ecstatic with exhaustion and joy for the fun we had, so it was time to prepare for the Clown show !!

As our show happens in a park, the garden was the best place. They put some fabric on the floor so that the children could sit comfortably. Our stage was based on a table and a garden stone bench, trees, roots, palm trees, sand and a radiant sun, a perfect place to dream awaken for a while.

Theater-17

We started the show!! the youngest were sitting in the front, astonished, without losing detail, the first laughter began and you could see everyone half sitting, motionless without losing a detail, not a gesture, a gift for the clown. At one point I asked for the help of an educator who surprisingly gave us an imitation bird that was the delight of the audience. Everyone participated, actively or with the desire to make it happen, love, surprise, laughter, together, sharing the same feelings.

Theater-14Theater-9Theater-10Theater-7Theater-8Theater-11Theater-12Theater-13Theater-15Theater-18

Finally, we said goodbye, dancing, looking at the audience and sighing the air of the whole day, a breath of happiness… the life I want to life…

At the end of the workshops and the show the children gave us a gift that they had made. So beautiful people!!!!

Theater-19

And … they invited us to eat, sharing the dining room, the same garden, with children and caregivers, while the children were coming time by time to play with us… : D. And we said goodbye, as travelers we always, sooner or later, we do leave… See you next time! We want to see you again !!

School of Hope, Arunothai, North of Thailand

The first project we have done is in Arunothai (Nong Uk), a small village in northern Thailand, near Myanmar border. We traveled by motorcycle from Chiang Mai, 137 km, a good time on the road, but the occasion was worth it! There is the School of Hope.

School of Hope is a school located inside the Wat Arunothai, a Buddhist temple, where children of Burmese origin (between 4 and 17 years old) whose parents live far away and can not take care of them. Their legal situation in Thailand is paperless. The only way these children can reside in Thailand is if a Thai adult takes responsibility of them (each adult can have a maximum of 10 dependent children).

sof foundation logo

Thailand has more economic resources than Myanmar, so this school gives them the opportunity to have a roof, eat properly, have personal hygiene routines, learn at school to be able to have a profession, etc.

The children mix with the novice monks of the temple in the afternoon, and together they learn and meditate. The caregivers, like Mr. Ken and Mr. Ae, take care of the 45 children, and give them all the attention they can, in addition to devoting part of their salary to purchase some supplements such as snack and milk.

So that day they were waiting for us to share, enjoying … a Clown Journey !!!! Ole Ole ole!!

We started with a dynamic / outdoor warming-up game. At first they behaved timidly, but as the minutes passed the smiles began to loosen. As we progressed, they were more and more engaged, with a surprising motivation, laughing, they perfectly understood the games although our language were universal gestures and a minimum English. We were surprised, for the dedication of the novice monks, very interested to know and learn more. It really was a fantastic experience, feeding our hearts, it was a lesson, how much we can give each other.

And finally, we prepared a theater with the materials that we could find, and we made them a representation of Clown !! Dreaming Paintings!! None of them had gone or seen anything of theater or clown before, so this was their first experience, and we were going to give it all!

Let the show begin! All the children sitting expectantly, with their mouths open … and the music started to sound!! A real thrill!!!!

I guess it is not necessary to mention that it was an unforgettable experience, that we fell in love with them every minute … they are so beautiful! and that we enjoyed together sharing in the best possible way, through our eyes, our gestures and from the pure sincerity, through the Clown.

Kids Ark Foundation, in Sansai

Our next stop was: Kids Ark Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to help children and women in northwestern Thailand. They focus mainly on children and women in poverty who belong to ethnic minorities without resources. They help them to have a minimum education, hygiene and rights, so they can break the poverty chain. They also provide a space where they can be safe and grow in a more appropriate environment, physically and psychologically. They have several centers in the north of Thailand, we went to the center of the Sansai district, just outside Chiang Mai.

kids-ark-min

Mr. Ya came to meet us, a very nice Thai man who is in charge of organizing this center. After 45 min driving we finally arrived to the location, a place with 2 well constructed buildings, some of them were dedicated entirely for children, the one in the lower part is an ambulatory, and on the first floor they have rooms where the children can also do activities.

The first thing we did was eating with the educators and the children, who were already in a single line with their trays waiting to be filled with food. There were about 40 children, between 6 and 14 years old, full of energy and with chicky faces. They were looking at us with curiosity and shyness, and they laughed a lot when we tried to speak the little Thai that we learnt. The children almost did not speak English, but with gestures and the translation of the educators the communication was fluid.

We started with the workshops, where the children had a lot of fun. First they were a little shy, but as they got warmer they gave themselves completely to the activities. We were surprised how motivated they were to demonstrate their interpretive skills, while the bravest of them took pains to do the clown … the purpose of the day was on track!!

The second part of the day we made a Clown show for them. During the show their faces were a poem, they were perplexed to see us acting, with their mouths open, the eyes wide opened watching our movements, and although we had already shared some good time together, we asked for the help of a volunteer and they were so scared to show themselves!!

IMG_20170320_151219IMG_20170320_152650IMG_20170320_151556IMG_20170320_152736

And it was the end an unforgettable day, with the best company and with a heart full of their smiles. We left between hugs and laughter, with the memory of all the children waving and saying goodbye to us… Aaaaaish … how beautiful is the clown’s life…

Srongtsen Bhrikuti Boarding High School, a prestigious school available to everyone

The next collaboration was with Srongtsen Bhrikuti Boarding High School, a Tibetan school in Kathmandu. We had contacted them through Petit Món, and the reason is because they have sponsored about 30 students.

Although it is a private school, two thirds of the children who study in it are sponsored, so this school does a huge social work, not only providing education to children without resources, but also away from the school model -Begin, students from different social classes share the same academic level and the same conditions.

IMG_20171106_085137

Our contact was Mr. Jampa, the head of studies, he facilitated our work very much, he was open to any proposal and even to compress the schedules to get the most out of it. The plan was: for 2 days; 3 workshops on the first day including one for teachers and the performance plus two workshops for the second day.

So we started at the beginning, the first day … often luminaries I am made … In the morning the first thing that all the students do is to meet in the courtyard, a huge esplanada, to do the daily assembly, Buddhist prayers, sing the anthem of Tibet and then sing the anthem of Nepal.

IMG_20171106_091610

And right after we were introduced to us, in front of more than 500 people !!! It was impressive to see 500 uniformed boys greeting us … We passed the bus, we introduced ourselves and we thanked them for welcoming us.

IMG_20171106_091256

The workshops were made in the Music Hall, an old but charming space, with cement steps and a dusty stage. The arrival of the children was staggered, so we started a little late.

IMG_20171106_100314

IMG_20171106_100324

The first group was 14-15 years old and there were about 20 students, all in uniforms and with ties, we gave each other the pleasure of telling them to loosen their ties !!! Hehehe … Everything was great, even though one of them was more messy and they were all shy, they were letting go and motivating, they were very involved, it was a pleasure to experience their desire to learn, and they felt the curiosity that they had to the arts.

IMG_20171106_114909IMG_20171106_113639

The two groups, both in the morning and in the afternoon were very funny, some with more self-confidence than others, they gave themselves up to the exercise, untying the bonds of external judgment, among them they fed the exhibition, the desire to see others, the Imaginative worlds of other heads … All day was a pleasure.

IMG_20171106_140303

IMG_20171106_140329

At the last minute we did a workshop for teachers. They attended 18 of them, people in general of about 40 to 50 years, with more or less classic aspect. They looked like they were going to enjoy it, without a doubt !!!

IMG_20171106_150840IMG_20171106_150849

So it was. We started with the warm-up and the first laughs and jokes began. Then we went to do some mime. They behaved in a timid way, but prediaposed to do it, sometimes with a little obligation … but they laughed a lot.

IMG_20171106_153246IMG_20171106_153251

The last exercise was to do a bit of improvisation. When explaining the exercise some of them said that they had to leave urgently … hahaha … in a hurry, they did not dare to expose themselves in any situation. To this it was added that the students had finished and we had a circle of them watching the teachers do the clown !!!! They started in pairs, very well, very natural and funny, with shyness but giving everything! Bravo profes!

IMG_20171106_153459

And so the day ended, we picked up and went to the apartment that Petit Món left us, and that was great.

The next day we went very soon, we had to prepare to act just after the daily morning assembly, in front of more than 500 people! What a joy!

IMG_20171107_093332

One of the students was not a sound technician, and we explained the music changes. After, costume and makeup. And … let the show begin !!!!

IMG_20171107_094326IMG_20171107_094620

Everything was great, the audience incredible, they screamed of illusion, the laughs were contagious to every action, every clown look, impressive. We enjoyed it like never before.

IMG_20171107_095146

At the end, all the children surrounded us, they wanted to hit five, give their hands, even hug us!

IMG_20171107_093510

We went to the Music Hall to do the workshop in the morning, when on the way came a troop of children about 4-5 years old with open arms that clashed with us to hug us … how cute it was! Then they would turn and run away !!! What a tender gesture, what more loving children … They left us a meringue …

IMG_20171106_094613

IMG_20171106_094606

The two workshops of the day were for students in grade 9, between 15-16 years, and both were a gift. They were super motivated with the desire to do theater, clown, we were surprised. A couple of girls made the best improvisation we’ve seen in the whole trip, almost tears the tears of taste, were very good and knew what they did …

IMG_20171107_114847

IMG_20171107_112827IMG_20171107_140420

At the end of the last class a group of girls wanted to do an improvisation, without preparing, in the extra time … first time that happens to us … Incredible !!!

IMG_20171107_115407

And so we finish this collaboration, intense, as they are all, but with a very good taste, for having shared it with motivated people who valued the power of interpretation and clown !! We say goodbye, but you will come back to know about us … Besazos !!!!

IMG_20171109_074708

Nepal Disable Association, Orthopedic Hospital, a place full of people wanting to laugh

The next collaboration was also through Petit Món, we will talk about them in the following post, they have been very special for us for all their help. This time it was a performance at the Shankarapur Hospital of the Nepal Disable Association (NDA) dedicated to spinal cord injuries and paralysis. Petit Món helps them greatly improve the living conditions of patients by donating essential equipment.

The latest acquisition was an electric wheelchair for a girl with cerebral palsy called Dolma. Dolma used to depend on someone moving her in a conventional wheelchair, and now, thanks to Petit Món, she can move at will … a contribution that changes a life …

IMG_20171102_122736

We had agreed to do the performance at 12 pm with Krisna, a guy who is responsible for coordinating the activities of the section. So we arrived at the hospital, Krisna received us and with him we discussed the details, Karen, one of Sano Sansar’s boys would make us sound technician, we put the bench in the courtyard, where we would act and everything was ready.

We went to a room to prepare. Between hospital stretchers we changed clothes and we put on makeup, it did not take too long for us to give the signal of preparations !!! So he was spreading the word to Karen, who started the music … We went on stage!

IMG_20171104_125326

There were children and adults there, mostly wheelchair-bound in a single line, eager to see the performance … At first they were stunned, they liked what they saw but it was not the version of clowns they expected … but little by little they were entering the story and they began to feel the first disturbances and the first laughs, we began the trip together through the imaginary of Soñando Brushes.

20171104_125431

We also gradually let go, helped by the volunteers we took from the audience, a love of interventions that made the moment of all, sharing moments of this simple story that only pretends a smile …

20171104_130533

In the end, all together we share opinions and comments: they liked it very much !! We liked to see that it had surprised them, that they did not expect something like that, we had brought the theater to their center and they had been able to taste it calmly.

20171104_131244

20171104_131232

It is very gratifying to be able to share moments like this, to be able to perceive the gratitude of people to whom we can change their routine a bit, to show life from a different perspective, and it gave us the impression that they needed and appreciated it.

Finally we made the group photo, a beautiful experience that leaves us a delicious taste … This fills us, gives meaning to this trip and everything we do!

Koseli Foundation, a school in Kathmandu slam

After the Dhasain and once recovered from trekking Everest base camp we contacted Hugging Nepal, an NGO led by Alvaro and Maria. A lovely group of people who have been living in Kathmandu for almost 4 years. We met with them to see the possibilities of collaboration we had. In the following post we will tell you more about the work and the projects that are carried out in Nepal.

To begin with, he gave us the contact of a school called Koseli Foundation, which works to educate 75 children of slam (barracks suburbs) that are on the borders of the Baghmati river in Kathmandu.

descarga

We arrived at the school at the time they had cited us, at 10 a.m. There we waited until Mrs. Neelam, the director of the foundation, arrived. We told him about doing a theater workshop for the older ones and then the clown show, he answered that it would be great, so we got down to work. We dressed in our work uniform and summoned the older children in the yard to start.

IMG_20171030_121821

We did the typical exercises, coordination, concentration, teamwork, we explained them little by little and with translation of the school staff. Everything was going well, the children were motivated as we went.

We focused efforts on the timid ones who were sometimes more reluctant to collaborate, and so we made sure that everyone participated. As always the beasts are tamed when it’s time to improvise in front of the group … hehehe … then the storm gives way to calm … who will be the / the volunteer …? Hehehehehe (malignant laughter).

IMG_20171030_125230

But the nerves last only until the first volunteers, seeing that it was not so difficult they got the urge to go out and show off. It is very nice to see them with their noses on representing small scenes, giving everything! So the workshop ends in style, the children asking to be able to do one more … aaaish … that fills us … but there is no time, we must do the show now !!!!

IMG_20171030_135351

We explain to the improvised sound technician the tickets of the music and we will prepare. As we are used to, we have 10-15 min to get dressed, make up and prepare. At first, the rush stressed us and they did not let us enter the scene well … with time and repetition you end up getting used to it …

IMG_20171030_135750

The music starts! We go on stage, children of all ages are at their best !!! The first laughs do not take long to arrive, and that always gives us an extra motivation that feeds back.

We always try to keep the children in the shade during the performance so that they do not get burned, but this time, the passage of time after planning had discovered the sun in the first row … so these children were watching us against the light, with the hand making a visor, looking for the point where they could see something, and also did not stop laughing, delivered … that public taste!

IMG_20171030_134406

They had a hard time dating as volunteers, so they laughed and pointed at each other to avoid being chosen, until we pulled out the lucky one, who with a mischievous and embarrassed face came out animated by the audience … a show in itself …

IMG_20171030_142036

In addition, the volume of the music attracted neighbors who looked to see over the fence, until we went to one of them to enter the number, it would have been very fun, however when he left all were scattered running between laughs … we talk about grandmothers and grandparents fleeing from the clown … hahahaha …

IMG_20171030_140545

And, nothing is forever, everything has an end or a see you later. To thank us for the timeshare the children of the foundation made us a souvenir gift, a pencil jar and a beautiful drawing the two made by them !!!! They gave it to us between mutual hugs … how nice they are … We keep you in our hearts and until next time !!!!

Papa’s house, a home for happy children

And we are already in Nepal !!!! After crossing the border through Birgunj, as if it were another century, a lot of truck traffic mixed with carts pulled by oxen guided by men with skirts and turbans. We are headed to Kathmandu, but before that, 15 hours of bus waiting for us on tortuous roads …

There we expect a response from all the NGOs to which we had sent a request for collaboration. For many days there was silence. We coincide with the local festival of Dhasain, the most important of the year, which means a month’s holiday in schools.

The first NGO that answered us was Papa’s House. An NGO that is dedicated to giving education and a decent life to children without resources. We were told that there were only about 20 children in the house because of the holidays. Of course we were delighted to help them, excited about our first collaboration in Nepal.

IMG_3600

The house was about 5 km from our hotel, so we decided to walk! In this way we gained a more global vision of the city, in addition to the more tourist center.

IMG_3601

The house was beautiful because of its large garden covered with grass, with swings and a basketball court. We came to receive Michael, a great man who introduced us to everyone, teachers and children, all with huge smiles, were waiting for the arrival of the clowns!

IMG_3616

IMG_3619

After getting acquainted with the children, we decided to start the workshop, in the garden, on the refreshing lawn. The children were of very different ages, from 4 years old the smallest, to teenagers.

IMG_3644

But we were able to do a combination of exercises so that everyone could have a space. They were very shy, they had a hard time doing exercises where they showed each other individually in front of the group, but as we went along the confidence increased and the tension gave way to fun.

IMG_3661

How funny they were, especially the smallest, who kept running enjoying his two new legs, knee prostheses down.

IMG_3656

IMG_3651

IMG_3646

The end came with a few simple improvisations that put everyone to the test, how funny, they were nervous and shy, very cute …

IMG_3640

IMG_3642

IMG_3641

And the end of the workshop gave way to our performance. We prepared the stage, which of course would be on the lawn, we placed the bench of rigor and gave the guidelines to the improvised sound technician who was more nervous than if he acted …

IMG_3623

IMG_3672

IMG_3644

IMG_3632

IMG_3631

For us, each performance is unique, we always get nervous moments before we start, so we live it more intensely … it does not tire us.

IMG_3667

The moment arrived, the music sounds and we went on stage, the children very excited, finally the clowns! They have a great time with our nonsense, they love it and they let us know with their laughs and smiles, looking directly at us with those bright eyes, open like plates, open mouths, oblivious to the dogs that do not stop barking …

IMG_3717

The scenes happen and the children crowd every time we ask for a volunteer. We enjoy your generosity, your enthusiasm and your ability to enlighten us with your innocence.

IMG_3700

IMG_3699

In the end applause and hugs, smiles and a lot of love … We would stay to live in that house without hesitation !!!! What a wonderful environment, it is exciting to be able to witness such altruistic works. We wish you the best of the world !!!! Lots of hugs and kisses.

Tee Gyi, Green Pastor Project, an experience of other times

The next collaboration was also through Fondació Myanmar. It is a project called Green Pastor carried out in a village called Tee Gyi, near the village of Shwebo. Our contact was Martin, a very nice Burmese. He is the project coordinator and lives in this village together with his family.

IMG_20170922_072958

IMG_20170922_071457

Mario, the beautiful son of Martin!!!!

He explained that they provide education to the children of the village by supporting the local school and providing extra classes in the afternoon. They have also opened a daycare center where they take care of the children from 3 to 5 years old while their parents are working. In order for children to attend school, they provide support to their families through a goat breeding program. This one tries to promote and generate a business for these families as goat breeders, in addition to the other activities of the field, and thus receive a salary.

IMG_20170921_164223

To get to the town from Mandalay, 110 km away, we followed the indications that Martin gave us. First we took a local bus to the town of Shwebo. The trip lasted 3 hours, in a pretty scenic bus, full of locals, with a tendency to get dizzy and to expel the breakfast prematurely …

IMG_20170921_113227

At least one person per trip shares the breakfast with the landscape … without any obvious reason, we only saw it in Myanmar … Once in Shwebo we hope that Martin will pick us up taking us a delicious tea from Myanmar, green tea with condensed milk … an exquisite caloric bomb.

IMG_20170827_170932.jpg

Up to the village we went on two bikes, one of Martin and one of his brother, which did not have a double seat, but a platform to carry merchandise. The journey lasted 40 minutes, and I assure you it was not easy, the platform was hard as a rock. The first road was by asphalt road and then by car road, literally, we were dodging carts pulled by oxen.

IMG_20170921_141028

The platform was a nightmare … Also part of the road was impracticable, we had to get off the bike to get it out of the mud and continue, the adventure began in the village of Tee Gyi !!!!

IMG_20170922_230925

Once there, we went to Martin’s house, where some of the adults of the town were waiting for us, curious, they came to receive us … What a spectacle of people, what laughter we stuck together, especially with one that had a lot of character.

There was also Ségolène, a French girl we met in Vientiane, collaborating with Enfants du Mekong and who had put us in touch with Fondació. She was living there for a week … how brave …

Then we explored the area. We went to see the school, which was a brick building with an esplanade in front. All the furniture was made of wood, we found it very beautiful, with few resources and very basic, but the image of that place in the middle of the field, with the children “uniformed” in green and white was very bucolic.

IMG_20170922_074758

The uniform of schools throughout the country is: the bottom, skirt or lodgy, green and the top white shirt, and usually the clothes have a hole that another … also carry a cross bag, usually handmade for them, sometimes they hang it on their foreheads.

IMG_20170922_075454

When they saw us arrive, the children went crazy! and of course, we started playing with them. The teacher tried to calm them, but without success, and we decided to leave so that they could recover normality and continue with their tasks, we would see each other in a few minutes after class …

Martin’s farm and his family is where the corral with the goat farm is. There are about 40 goats, 4 cows, 3 pigs and a few chickens that got everywhere …

The place was very picturesque, perfect for the workshop and the show !!! The problem was finding a space with shade, avoiding the scorching sun, and being free of obstacles. Finally we decided to do it on an area covered with grain of wheat, or something similar, with the occasional boundary of a cow, which enjoyed the shade of a large tree.

IMG_20170922_072910

Martin gathered all the children to do the workshop, they were euphoric, super excited to be with us !! Any small game that we proposed they accepted immediately … very funny.

IMG_20170921_142732

We started the exercises of the workshop, it was impossible to get them to concentrate, they did not stop, they all shouted every word we said … hahaha … Since they did not speak English, Martin translated us, but it was complicated, each explanation took a long time , so we let go of complications and we oriented everything to games …

IMG_20170921_164718

Despite the small difficulties, we had all very well, between games and laughter, the children were delighted! And the parents who were around all the time looking around kept smiling …

IMG_20170922_074444

After the workshop, all the children dispersed, as did the adults, while we reminded them that in 30 minutes we were going to do the performance. We prepared the bank on the grain area as a stage, and we put other banks as tiers for the public …

IMG_20170921_164602

We prepared, we had everything ready and some children had already arrived, however they were still too few to begin with. We decided to wait a while, and yes, there were some more, but still not enough, in total there were about 12, compared to the more than 30 people we expected.

IMG_20170922_231229

After a while of waiting Martin recommended us to start so that the rest were attracted by music and laughter … And so we did, we started the show. The first laughs came very quickly, and effectively that attracted the rest of the people, almost the entire village, in the end the audience was about 50 people.

IMG_20170921_172531

The adults, especially the women, laughed loudly, it was a success, they started laughing. They loved that we were volunteering, it seemed to them that they would see someone from their village on stage with us dead of shame … An excellent audience … At the end of the number they asked us for a second part, they wanted more!

We told them that the next time the story would continue … While a group of children with nicked smiles, wild hair and dresses full of mud and dust surrounded us asking for more play. So we spent the next half hour crashing palms and tickling between chases. And our collaboration ended, with dozens of smiling faces around us recreating number scenes while commenting and continuing to laugh.

We stayed to sleep in Martin’s house, like Ségolène. The family slept in the dining room, and we in the kitchen. During the dinner appeared on the floor of the dining room, next to Ségolène, a centipede 15 cm long and 2 cm wide that apparently is poisonous, a true prehistoric monster, without exaggeration! They all threw themselves to kill him at the moment, but that did not prevent poor Ségolène from being scared white …

IMG_20170921_164057

The night was not very good. The mosquito net did not isolate us from the smaller insects, so we were covered in them … and one of the goats was angry with the world and did not shut up all night! However, we had next to it an open window showing us a spectacular sky, all the stars were visible, besides the precious light of some firefly from time to time …

IMG_20170922_073702

The next day, from the hand of a group of children, we took a walk through the village, among cows, huts of straw and bamboo, looms and large wooden containers where as a mortar they crushed the grain … another world .. another century …

And we went back to Mandalay along the same road but in the opposite direction … An unforgettable experience … We do not stop learning.

Orphanage Palana, between crazy hairs and slingshots

After the workshop for JRS, we were going to do a performance at the Palana Orphanage. It is an orphanage with 177 children between the ages of 5 and 18. Half comes from families that have no means to support them and the other half directly do not have family …

IMG_20170913_145355

Just crossing the street we were already in the orphanage. First we find his football field, with goals made with three wooden sticks. After the building where we were going to act, a large room where all the children were already waiting for us … what a pressure! We had not even drunk water after the previous workshop !!!! And next to the bedrooms, a large wooden cabin, a large room full of wooden bunk beds, we felt like being in another century …

IMG_20170913_161039IMG_20170913_172116IMG_20170913_172045

We could not lose a second, since everyone was waiting for us !!!! We went into the room to see the space … they were watching us, we had many looks on top … expectant … so we are going to do a little fool … hahaha … the reaction was immediate … they started laugh and approach timidly … They were very curious but also a certain respect … what was this? What does that guy do looking at us without doing anything with a scared face …? hahahaha … what a cute thing, with bigger size shirts, dirty faces after playing soccer, wild hair, those smiles showing all the teeth, faces of rogues … This was going to be very beautiful! !

IMG_20170913_145458.jpg

But first things first … Paul, the head of the center and our contact, would make us sound technician. We tried the loudspeaker, all right, I told him the brands of music change, all understood, and come! Let’s move on!!! Ah! the camera, we placed it to be able to record this unrepeatable scene … 177 children with crazy desires to see what we were offering !!!! And once everything in its place … to change us !!!!

IMG_20170913_173454

We changed very quickly in his bedroom, on a wooden bunk, putting on makeup, the little makeup we use, with a piece of mirror that we carry, and … ready! Kisses, many shits, slaps on the ass and scene.

Just enter, with a simulated tripping the first laughs began … the audience was very willing … The show was going very well !!!! I was loving them …

IMG_20170913_174222

What they could not see was the majestic entrance of Mayra behind the room, as it entered without warning went unnoticed … but I did see it … hahahaha … it went flying !! … I had to suppress the laughter … and she, as a great professional it is, it continued as if nothing had happened …

IMG_20170913_175403

At one point we ask for a volunteer, it has to be a small child because we have to pick him up … because there was no way that one of the kids dared to leave … hahaha … Luckily a daring volunteer came out rescue, the problem is that it was much older than expected … but we did not change anything, and it was even more funny … than laughing holding the volunteer in his arms … first me, and then the next adult volunteer, Paul … hahaha … people recognized the mistake of the moment and even laughed more …

IMG_20170913_173833

And finally, we ended up, with the same love scene as always, between applause, shouts and laughter … All the children surrounded us and we started hitting the five, they piled up, they surrounded us hanging by our arms … they were to eat them to all!!!! And finally, a final group photo … with the 177 children! LOL…

IMG_20170913_181202

What a beautiful place to end a day so full of everything … From teenagers with a lot of desire to meet, to share with us, to listen to us, dozens of Tom Sawyers and Huckleberry Finns with the wild hairs and the slingshot in their pockets, enjoying and giving us their laughs … Aaaaish … food for the heart …

IMG_20170913_181832

We went out to change, we were surrounded by dozens of children, watching, commenting among themselves, while, we continued making the clown for their fun … These children were totally open to what we could offer them … and we gave it our all, our love, our laughter and our tears … the truth is that they deserve that and much more … We do not want to leave! See you soon … sniff …
