Refugee camp in Palana, the teachers to re-find the lost

In Myitkyina we met a sister of the order daughters of Jesus, Rosemary, and she asked us if she could join the last two days to the workshop we were doing (see Fondacio post), we told her no problem.

Rosemary is taking a training course for teachers who will be assigned to teach in schools of displaced persons camps run by the NGO Jesuits Refugees Service (JRS). This NGO has a presence throughout the world, providing education and resources to people who are in refugee camps, which sometimes is not a temporary situation, but decades …

This is the fourth edition of the teacher training that takes place, and the teachers of the previous editions are already working as teachers in the orphanage and in the Palana refugee camp.

IMG_20170913_144738

Rosemary asked us if we could have a space to do a workshop for these future teachers, also people from remote areas, in rural areas with scarce economic resources … And we said that of course !!! Even if we only had one afternoon available … Something is something … we would do a 3-hour workshop, doing mixed exercises on various topics, especially communication, which was what could be more useful.

IMG_20170913_144524

So we finished the previous workshop with Fondació (see post) ate in 15 min, we prepared the backpack and we shot out towards the town of Palana. Rosemary took care of the transport, since it was on the outskirts of Myitkyina. Once there … what a beautiful place! In the middle of a meadow, with the imposing mountains in the background, dressed in a tulle of clouds … The school was a big wooden hut, the red clay road, where a car pulled by oxen passed by … A stage of story …

IMG_20170913_160817

We arrived at 13:30 and they were all in the classroom. It was about 24 chi @ s between 18 and 24 years old. Our translator was named Shan. They were all sitting in the desks, in the old style, all made of wood. And we started, of course, introducing ourselves, then we made them get up and make a circle …

IMG_20170913_144854

We started with you and your dream … Knowing them one by one we discovered them, they showed and showed some of their characteristics … a very good start … As we had very little time we did a mix, the exercises were quite fast and explosive , the intensity was very high at all times, and they did not have time to relax …

IMG_20170913_145050

They were very committed, you could see them a lot, some very teenage attitudes, but with the high intensity of the exercises and we were always connected at all times … We insisted very much on the need for clear communication, a complete interaction between sender and receiver, and at all times we put it in a teaching context, directing it to teachers.

IMG_20170913_160935

We took a short break and continued with exercises more physically rested, but with greater difficulty. They experienced the difficulties of communication, like not taking for granted the effectiveness of the message … They were astonished with the result … they did not expect it, it was really enriching, for us and for them …

IMG_20170913_160904

And so we finished the workshop one afternoon, with very motivated young people who would be the teachers of the area, an easy task, in conditions that require more art than knowledge … Very good luck!

IMG_20170913_171503

And we continued with a performance in the orphanage, which was right next door, crossing the street … (see next post).

Fondació Myanmar, in the north between armed conflict… in Myitkyina

Our next clownian stop was Myitkyina !! A city in the state of Kachin. If you want more information about the place, check out Myitkyina’s post on our travel blog. Through Fondació Myanmar, they offered to participate in the same Youth Leadership and Development Center (YLDC) course for young people in Kachin State. As in the Yangon version, the course was intended to train people with few economic resources to help later in development projects in the area, heavily punished by drug-diction and jade mines …

In this case the organization provided us with transportation, 22 bus hours from Yangon, and accommodation.

IMG_20170909_150336

We stayed in the dormitories owned by the church, from which the NGO Fondacio itself was born. It was very nice because we were living with Rita and Zenaw, our contacts there. They prepared us spectacular local dishes every day for lunch and dinner !!! and then we shared the table talking about all kinds of topics about the country, the region, us, our dreams …

IMG_20170912_193030

For example Rita is from Bhoma, a city south of Myitkyina with a very high rate of heroin addiction. From what he told us, between 80 and 90% of the families have a heroin addict … so the family dramas are constant, the younger ones have easy access to this drug and the city can become very dangerous. Rita’s goal is to finish the training she is receiving from the Fondació to become a social worker and help her hometown … This is a good example of the consequences of the work of Fondació Myanmar and the projects being carried out there. church. To thank Rita and Zenaw for their hospitality since we were at home the 3 and a half days we lived there with them.

IMG_20170913_123616

When we arrived the YLDC course was in the second month so the group already knew each other. The age of the participants was between 16 and 27 years old. Due to the good result we got in Yangon we were going to do the same, the same exercises in the same order, and see if the answer was the same.

IMG_20170913_123606IMG_20170913_123603

We started as always with the presentations, ours and his, and thus we started a relationship that would end up being close. Then we would surprise them with warming up games, and everything started to take shape …

IMG_20170911_105026IMG_20170911_104636IMG_20170911_104614

They are very motivated people, eager to receive what we offered, it seemed that everything was going to be very fluid … And indeed, both the interpretation and communication exercises were great!

IMG_20170913_121951IMG_20170913_121935

Although they were very shy and unaccustomed to show, some more than others, they saw the importance of the exercises and put all the art they have, which is not little. This group was a little more shy than their fellow Yangon, however they have a different character that gives them value, in different ways.

IMG_20170911_105107

In exercises that normally everyone tries to escape by doing it in a hurry, they took it more calmly, even lengthened it more than necessary … all a gift … The exercises on emotions were as usual, difficult … No it is easy to express emotions suddenly and at the request, it requires its process, but it was great to see how they were trying, looking inside for the switch, the key, or the door … All an achievement, there is nothing better than starting with the beginning…

The rest of the days were like a silk, the motivation was skyrocketing, they even began to repeat the ones that appear while we explained, and they kept repeating them throughout the day, like a funny tagline … very funny !!! The last day we did the same as in Yangon, a final representation. They had to create a piece with some slogan that another provided by us … What a grace they have !!! They took it so seriously that it was super comical, concentrated, trying to represent an elephant as faithfully as possible … it had no price. They gave us some pearls to remember … like a crocodile that takes life coming out of a book, a fantastic scene in which a man sells his beloved donkey, showing deep sadness !!! What a gift! It was very emotional … Or a succession of scenes with human decorations, representing each important element … very alive!

IMG_20170913_124337

So we conclude this experience, learning more and more of the great people of this country. Walking our own labyrinths, all together, between smiles, surprise and trembling of shyness … hehehe … And to close the workshop we dedicated a few words on behalf of the whole group and made us a gift of remembrance !!!! A shirt with the flag of the region and ethnic group: Kachin. So we say goodbye with kisses on the cheeks and hugs … Wide and sincere smiles … That people better … we wish you the best and hope to return!

Fondació Myanmar, the young of the future in Yangon

In Yangon we also work with the NGO Fondació Myanmar. We were contacted by Segoléné, a volunteer from Enfants du Mekong, and after reading what they were doing we thought it would be perfect to be able to help out. It is an NGO associated with the church that organizes training for young people from areas outside Yangon or rural areas.

logo fondacio yangon

They help them in their development and thus provide decent work opportunities. This program is called Youth Leadership and Development Center (YLDC). It consists of 4 months of training, and they receive lodging and meals. Many of those who finish the course commit to help in other social actions carried out by the NGO.

Our contact was Roger Martin, who even dared to ask if he was Catalan … but no, in most of the Catholic organizations that we have worked, the locals acquire a baptismal name, and this is of Latin origin … So we find Victories, Marias, Julias …

After discussing the possibilities, and taking into account that they were already in the second month of the training, we decided that it would be ideal to be able to do a 3-day workshop, distributed in 5 sessions, 3 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon, so we could explore with the exercises that we have prepared several aspects of communication and social interaction.

The first day of the workshop we arrived a bit late … Besides the fact that we are both experts in rushing the time to the end, the trains in Yangon did not help, they are not exactly the most punctual transport we have used … as Carlo said Mo, the excuses are for beginners …

IMG_20170906_102230

We arrived at the center, and there were 20 chic @ s between 16 and 27 years old waiting for us, with eager looks, ready for everything, with a fantastic desire to start … So, here we go! First of all, we removed all the chairs that had been put to class … this was not going to be a normal class: fame costs !!! hehehehe …

IMG_20170906_105639

As always we started introducing ourselves, after them and from there our journey began. It was very nice, not only for them, for doing new activities that they discovered themselves and different aspects of interaction and communication, but also for us! We were amazed at how well the exercises worked, how easy it was to understand them, highlight the particularities of each interaction, as they themselves realized the difficulties while doing them …

IMG_20170906_110833

We had a translator, Júlia, who participated and helped us so that we all understood each other, and in most moments we did not need translation, everything was very clear, they were very open and the communication flowed without problems.

You could see the difficulties in the exercises that required exposure, go out and show yourself to the group. Most are not accustomed, they have no practice, so to see them perform exercises of gestural interpretation was a joy, as they tried to take their time, their space, and as stage fright, complexes, judgments hurried their actions … jijijiji. .. that’s what it is … to learn from samples reactions …

IMG_20170907_113907IMG_20170907_113620IMG_20170907_113247

In addition, in terms of group communication, listening and expression, according to cultures and customs, priorities vary, you can see how some aspects of communication are more worked than others, patience at the time of transmitting the message, the empathy to ensure the reception of communication, the relationship between the interlocutors …

IMG_20170907_143401IMG_20170907_143410

IMG_20170907_143427IMG_20170907_143505

All a fantastic world that never ceases to surprise … Surprising enough that sometimes it costs us so much to communicate when we are doing it every day …

The rest of the days were equally fluid, everyone was very committed, waiting impatiently for the next challenge, the next situation that would make them experience and learn more about themselves …

IMG_20170907_150445IMG_20170907_152144IMG_20170907_153548IMG_20170908_145348

And so it was, in each exercise we put them to the test, we made them approach a little more to know themselves … a task sometimes not very easy to accept, but they were very motivated !!!!

IMG_20170908_154717IMG_20170908_154858

And the last day arrived, moment to close, settle and conclude. For this we made them make a mini final representation, a group, scenic, artistic, communication and improvisation work … It was great! They enjoyed it, with its challenges and obstacles, both doing it as observing, analyzing and assimilating … A fantastic experience for all.

IMG_20170908_150644

Once finished it was time to say goodbye, and for that they surrounded us in a circle and told us a few words of thanks, sincere, for the three days we had shared, enjoyed and learned … and they gave us a package … with … 2 Longys !!!! The typical Burmese skirt !!!! How cool! How pretty!!!!

IMG_20170911_163629IMG_20170911_161724

IMG_20170927_101804IMG_20170927_101826

So a final hugs and we leave with everything put, the longys their love and how much we have learned with them … See you soon !!!

World Child Cancer, many cares to give

In Yangon, Myanmar, we contacted the NGO World Child Cancer. It is dedicated to providing resources to the oncology facility of Children Hospital of Yangon. They are dedicated to improving the conditions of patients suffering cancer, and provide minimal education to the children while they are admitted in the hospital.

logo world child cancer

After communicating by email, we met our contact person, Mr. Tung, a very nice and smiling guy who is in charge of directing the teaching team! We met in a cafeteria next to the hospital to specify details. After the meeting, he took us to visit the plant and the school. This is the largest hospital for children in all of Myanmar, and the conditions were pretty basic. We could see the Oncology plant, with the chemotherapy room and the recovery room.

IMG_20170829_170454

The school is a room next to the mentioned unit, with books and material as a classroom. It is opened every working day from 13 to 15 hours. On the wall hungs the list of subjects that the children work on the week, with some days dedicated for drawing and artistic expression, in addtion to other subjects. So it was prepared for us to share with them some exercises of theatre and expression for them to do with the children.

At night Tung confirmed that we could do the workshop for the teachers, but due to a flu pass it would not be possible to work with the children. Due to the chemotherapy the children have a very low immune system, so if there is a case of the flu they can no longer join them as a group, they would be exposed to contagion and it would be very dangerous for them. They could not even attend to the school on these days … A pity, although better to prevent.

And… the day of the workshop arrived!! We took the train and headed to the hospital. Once there, they were waiting at the door of the building to accompany us to the school room. Tung was already there and introduced us to the seven members of the group, teacher and social workers, aged between 27 and 55 years, approx … all women, and Tung.

IMG_20170829_152557

The younger girls looked sharp, eager to start, curious to see what we were going to show them, while the older ones were quite rigid, we suppose that they were shy, like asking themselves, what are these clowns going to make us do? … hehehehe …

The room was prepared as if we were going to give a theoretical symposium on child protection, a table with two chairs for the lecturers and chairs for the public … hahaha … So we started, and the first thing we said was to remove chairs and tables and put them aside … I think the older ones were even more scared …

IMG_20170829_152552

The objective of the workshop was to provide teachers with tools to do artistic activities with the children, but first they had to do the activities to know how well the mechanism, the difficulties and the variety of possible results … hahaha … They were shy…

IMG_20170829_160509

Let´s start !!! First, a presentation to start getting to know each other, they were all very shy !!! and sometimes they were very rigid … And once we all met, we started the exercises, from the beginning, and we gradually increased the difficulty … it was very funny!

21150180_1567008626696483_1315208216810769898_n21192734_1567017013362311_5649293209592965567_n

With the time they were getting relax, having a great time !!!! After the warm-up exercises, we went on to make small interpretations.

IMG_20170829_160744IMG_20170829_160638IMG_20170829_160616IMG_20170829_160612

You would expect to be complicated because they were timid … but it was amazing … hahaha … what a laugh !!!! They were very brave and we enjoyed a lot!! … we have not laughed so much in any workshop so far … crying !!!

IMG_20170829_161520

We were all parting … all the time, until the end. We shared a few exercises with the whole team … an amazing team!

The farewell was emotional, they thanked us for showing them another way of teaching, another way of approaching people, of getting people closer to themselves, and above all so that children spend some time traveling through their imagination and the one of the others. The faces of them were clear and sincere, did not need more words or translations, those clear smiles were telling us … What a great team! We hope to see you again … Thanks!

21192451_1567017546695591_4760119050504556402_n

In addition, Tung asked us to accompany him to dinner that night, and since we had a lot of connection, we accepted! He invited us all night to dinner and a few beers while talked about life and Myanmar … Interesting guys,,, Thank you Tung! Keep in touch!!!

Shelter House Lidy in Tahen, supporting S.A.U.C.E. in his great work

The last collaboration in Battambang, Cambodia, was with SAUCE, a Spanish NGO that belongs to the Apostolic Prefacture of the Diocese of Battambang, headed by Monsignor Kike Figaredo, an Asturian Jesuit, who is currently Apostolic Prefect of the Diocese of Battambang and President of Cáritas Cambodia.

logo sauce

We were amazed with the social work that they carry out from the organization !!!! For decades it has been assisting refugees, disabled people (mostly mine victims and polio victims) by handing out wheelchairs where they are needed, taking children out of poverty, creating shelters and schools, and helping families to children can get school and do not have to work at such an early age.

Not only do they perform these actions but they then follow up to ensure compliance with those conditions. We were amazed with all the logistics and effort that is invested, not only by volunteers but by the entire local community. With them we were able to carry out a couple of collaborations; a workshop of theater games and acting at the Lidy Tahen Shelter and a performance at a primary school in a very impoverished rural area.

IMG_20170618_154647

Tahen is a tiny town in Battambang province. It is a very rural area, a very poor environment, where there is no money to ensure the education of the youngest, so they accompany the adults to the fields to help, or if they are too young they stay with the grandmother or without no attention The objective of this home is to provide education to young people whose family situation would not allow it. Some are orphans, others have been abandoned and many come from broken or very poor families, with no resources to send their children to school.

IMG_20170618_154746

Currently, at Casa Lidy there are 45 students, 23 girls and 22 boys studying elementary school, high school and university.

When we arrived in Tahen all the children came to receive us, from a distance, they looked at us, they approached the volunteers they already knew and with whom they often played … they looked at us with their eyes … the new ones … We first chose the areas where we could first take the workshop and then the performance, and as time went by we started calling the youth to start the theater and clown workshop.

There were 45 children, between the ages of 8 and 15, very shy and with a very funny chulek touch. There was a small group of about 10 years old who were wearing the same football shirt, we assumed they were a team, and they did not stop fighting … We started with warm-ups, they started to laugh, but still in a nervous way, feeling the tension of what they were or were going to do. They already saw that they would have to expose themselves in front of their companions and had armed all their defenses against the ridiculous … hahahaha … they had nothing left … We continued with the warm-up exercises, the group was very dispersed, there were many games Parallel in petit committee, that distracted too much … It was not going to be easy !!!

IMG_20170618_180747

This experience is for and for them, so you have to read a bit the desire they have, the way we can stimulate them and redirect the exercises in the direction that they feel more motivated and more interested. So we started making group interpretation games, involving a bit of competition, something that would stimulate them. And so it was, while we played all laughed, commented, enjoyed, died of shame but at the same time the challenge motivated them and asked for more rounds of play, especially those who had not yet had the opportunity to show off, to measure themselves, to demonstrate. We already had little ones climbing up the back, playing with us, confidence had been created and with it a small bond.

IMG_20170618_182555

Suddenly: go! It started to rain, we had to pick up and go indoors. As time had already rolled over us, we decided to go to the show, because they had also prepared a demonstration of traditional and modern dances to show us !!!! that pride!!!! Well, but first we would make them the gift.

We prep the music and assign a sound technician: Javier, he has played you !!! He received it with a face of fright … but once explained … this is suck! We went to change, we already heard the children who were preparing … what nerves !!!!! the excitement was increasing, there were impatient children who were leaving us immediately! start now !!! Aaaaaaaah !!!!!

And the show starts … with that funny and romantic song, the kids were open-booed … they had never witnessed anything like that … that guy with a red nose did !!? Little by little the laughter began, with some volunteer that another, the laughter arrived, everyone enjoyed, they were surprised, they fell in love with the characters … There was a volunteer of about 10 years who had a special self-confidence, we both enjoyed interpreting together, listening to us, complementing us, but what a grace the kid had !!!!

The number was almost over, the adults were laughing, the little ones were coming with their enormous open mouth that opened the way forward … and finally … The kids applauded asking more! Great, we had managed to interest them, to feel that the story was about them, about all of us, and they wanted to know how it continued, what would be its end. After changing, the volunteers explained to us the comments of the children, at first one asked if he was acting or that’s how it was … then everyone wanted to volunteer, and in the end they asked for a second part, that lasted longer, that it will end there …

If we think about the experience and see the details, in a lost place in the world, between jungle and paddy fields, in a culture very different from the one we are used to, children with really important needs, in struggle to survive, and we feel the way which we have connected, we have shared, without oral communication, even on stage, you realize how close we are, how we are and how much we can learn from each other … Thank you for these moments kids! !!!

But this did not end here !!! They had prepared a sample of traditional and modern dances for us !!! Ole Ole ole!!! What monkeys like the traditional dance, all concentrated, with about 8 years old, giving everything! After others dancing a choreography to the Shakira … My Mother, but what art they have !!!! And so we finish, giving us all the art we have, what we can give …

IMG_20170618_181942IMG_20170618_181933IMG_20170618_181218

At the end of the day, the entire team of volunteers and workers invited us to dinner at the restaurant of the NGO that carries out social commitment actions. The restaurant managed by SAUCE offers Cambodian and Spanish food … We were able to eat omelette, gazpacho and croquetassss !!!!! My Mother! what a pleasure after so many months without trying so many home delights … a round night to end an exceptional day !!!! A thousand thanks to all

IMG_20170618_195437IMG_20170618_200857IMG_20170618_195854IMG_20170618_195616

Humanitarian Service for Children of Vietnam, great necessary job

In Hanoi we also collaborate with the NGO Humanitarian Services for Children of Vietnam (HSCV). This is an organization that is dedicated to helping people from rural areas without resources and also helps in the recovery of victims of human trafficking. We were going to work with 16 girls between 6 and 21 years old. The smaller ones came from rural areas, from families without resources that could not maintain them, and the older ones had been victims of human trafficking.

splash_logo

First we had a meeting to see how we could help. We met with Trang, and with her we agreed to hold a two-day workshop and a final performance where younger neighbors could also attend. The place where we would do the workshop was a little particular: It was the house where the girls were staying, so the space was very limited.

We decided to do the workshop and the show in the dining room, since it was the largest space in the house, but very limited, it was not very bright … but there was no other better option …

IMG_20170819_195336

Finally the day arrived, Saturday. We went by motorcycle to the address where the girls live, once there they invited us to eat, we picked up the table and … to mess!

It was not easy to involve the group, they were very dispersed and did not seem to know where they were or if they wanted to do it … they kept looking at the phone, until we told them to leave the cell phones in the other room. As the workshop progressed the concentration increased, although they died of shame with the idea of exhibiting in front of the group.

IMG_20170819_195750

Some girls were very attentive and motivated, they did not understand where this was taking them but they found it interesting to find out … others directly refused or did not stop talking to each other … We did what we could, although we know it is not easy Do the work we ask for, requires risk and commitment, desire to concentrate and assimilate the difficulty of showing up in public, even to start some contact with your emotions … and I guess the dining room in your home is not the best place. Anyway, we continue …

IMG20170819195942

The second day was the same as the first, the beginning cost a bit, we had to give everything to keep them motivated, to take them up, and little by little we were getting it. We did exercises of gestural interpretation, they made an effort and they made him want. So in the last exercise we made them think and represent a mini piece with some guidelines. That grace, they were dead of shame, but they threw all the meat to the spit and they removed it ahead !!!

IMG_20170819_212257

Hahahaha … they were very funny, even the lady who takes care of the house, much older, made a wonderful performance, with calm, calm, showing emotion, it was really a lesson of experience, of knowing how to do, with much art. And after this demonstration the girls came up. Bravo!!!!

And at the end of the workshop, we went to the next room to prepare to do the clown number … We were exhausted! It had not been easy and we did not have time to get back together … we already had some children from the neighborhood and they had already prepared the public chairs … Come on! Dress, makeup, a hug, a kiss, a slap on the ass and butt! Let the show begin!

IMG20170820160916

The music begins and I leave, in that small space, seeing faces of surprise, not knowing what to expect. As the smiles progressed they appeared, followed by laughter, the atmosphere warmed up, and everyone enjoyed it more and more.

IMG20170820161520

The girls blushed with the signs of love, while the girls laughed at faces and the most ridiculous poses, contention gave way to understanding, and then to fun. And so we finish, with the loudest laughs and applause.

IMG20170820161830

And it was good to say goodbye, give the collaboration by finished. So we gave thanks for letting us learn from them and with them, and they embraced us, and gave us a drawing to each one that the smallest, adorable ones had made! To eat them to kisses …

IMG20170820164054

IMG_20170826_173437

IMG_20170826_173508

And without any more calories to burn we left, with a big heart, full of two days of emotions, of learning, and of the warmth of this house, of these girls and the smallest … See you soon !!!!

Blue Dragon Foundation, very good job in the centre of Hanoi

This is a special project, we had never worked with people who had suffered a similar situation before. Blue Dragon Foundation is an NGO located in Hanoi, and has several projects. In the center they have next to the Old Quarter in Hanoi, they are dedicated to the development of children with few resources and in danger of social exclusion.

IMG_4993

IMG_4913

They provide hygiene, food and adequate education, in addition to promoting their artistic development, especially music and dance. There we met again with two of the Phare social circus teachers Ponleu Solpek who were there to collaborate for a year.

1 (3)

This center is also dedicated to the rescue and support of girls victims of human trafficking. Imagine that a relative or friend tells you to go to a very cool place, go with him / her, and when you arrive there are only some guys who give a sum of money to your “friend” in exchange for you … and what Next thing you know is that you’re in a brothel in China … Incredibly painful, a hell come true …

logo

Well look at the Blue Dragon Foundation website and you will find other stories as real as they are creepy explained by their protagonists … After the rescue, Blue Dragon Foundation also provide the necessary conditions for girls to rebuild their lives as normally as possible and without their captors being able to find them again …

IMG_4934

We contacted them through the Phare circus and at the time they saw the need for our collaboration. Clown exercises are not only a fun time but also help to connect with emotions, something essential for people who have suffered such a traumatic situation.

IMG_4994

Our contact was Phuong, the head of the team of traffic attendants. We agreed to do a performance for the children of the center and a workshop and performance for the girls victims of trafficking. This duplicity in the performance is due to the fact that the girls are separated from the rest of the chic @ s to avoid identifications by captors, and as a consequence the NGO could not continue sheltering them …

IMG_4954

IMG_4964

The first performance was made for the chic @ s who enjoy the center, aged between 6 and 21 years. Many of them do some artistic practice promoted by the center, so it was an open and willing audience … great!!!

We went to change while the caregivers organized the pack of children and teenagers, quite excited, around the space that we had defined as the stage. Once ready and prepared … Here we go!!!

It was not difficult to start the first laughs, with some tripping, “taking” the cookies to one of the children who did not expect it … hahaha … what face did … And with our usual dramaturgy … everything was like silk!

We took a super cool young man as volunteer who was dying of shyness … while others enjoyed it. It was very tender and fun all the time.

IMG_5008

At the end, great applause and the children returned to theirs, but not before thanking us with full sincerity in their faces … They saw very healthy children and above all they were very comfortable there, with the caregivers … good work! !!

IMG_4890

The next day we went to the workshop with the girls. Some carers also pointed out that they also helped us create a more trusting environment. We programmed a workshop for 2 days, 3 hours each day, and everything was great. As always at the beginning we had to break the ice for us, and once again close to them everything was easy, they were delivered with great interest and motivation !!!

IMG_0672

It was beautiful to see them represent scenes of mime, concentrated, terrified (in a positive way) by showing themselves in front of the audience (their companions) … but they did great! They are very strong and eager to know and learn … It was a pleasure to share this time with them.

The second day was even better, we had already weaved a minimum of confidence that brought us closer to share experiences, to focus more on interpretive skills. The absence and the shame I leave step to the complicity although with timidity. We laughed a lot together and they were comfortable, nervous before each exercise and light when finishing … hehehe …

IMG_0663

To finish the workshop we represent our clown number, in this way they could see first what we did and what we had spoken to them. So while they were eating something, we prepared the stage in the same room and prepared ourselves in the bathroom. Once ready … Let the music begin!

IMG_0689

Everything went very well, and of course, as it is a love story they loved it. They laughed and at some point we even saw them being touched … what a … hehehe …

IMG_0697

And finally, to say goodbye, the foundation had bought fried chicken to dine all together and share that time while they told us with excited faces how much they had liked it and had never seen this type of theater … but they loved it! !! Hehehe… We had already given everything, we were exhausted, and the reward was his enthusiasm and joy … Thank you very much! You are a love !!!!

1 (1)

The foundation invited us to attend a few days later to a competition they had prepared: Blue Dragon Got Talent !! A competition of artistic skills simulating the television program. It was fun!! the kids were excited! They gave everything and then received their score.

How funny they were doing choreography, singing like in a karaoke, and doing dj … It was a great afternoon and all the staff of the center was overturned. Great idea for the “children” to have a different afternoon.

Escuela Phies, smiles between rice fields, with the NGO Karuna Battambang in Cambodia

One of the collaborations that we did in Cambodia was with the NGO Karuna Battambang that belongs to SAUCE, an association also linked to the Apostolic Prefecture headed by Monsignor Enrique Figaredo, an Asturian Jesuit who is currently Apostolic Prefect of the Battambang diocese and President of Cáritas Camboya. Kike has dedicated his life to work for the most needy, especially refugees, the disabled and children living in poverty, which has earned him the nickname of “the bishop of wheelchairs.” This NGO is mainly dedicated to the schooling of children in conditions of poverty that are normally found in rural areas. They build schools, commit to teaching staff and monitor the students’ level with periodic exams.

On this occasion, the collaborators of the NGO, with our contacts Thea and Phut, went to several schools to perform level tests to ensure the correct evolution of the schooling of the students. On the way, they took us to Phies school.

This school is located 10 km from Battambang, in a remote area in the middle of rice fields. In the time of Pol Pot, these paddy fields were extensive fields of work, where the crazy ideas of increased production of the leader of the Khmer Rouge were put into practice … almost nothing … you could still hear the earth scream …

DSC_1142

The school building had been a barn for animals that was on a lake. Some local teachers had used it to teach some students in the past but due to the lack of resources they had to abandon the idea and close it. Karuna Battambang had opened it again, had conditioned it and provided aid to the teachers who taught there. In addition, to ensure children’s attendance, families receive a quantity of rice for the schooling of their children. In the case that the child does not attend school, the aid to the family is withdrawn, thus ensuring that the child is the main beneficiary.

We arrived in pick up at the school, the building is composed of 5 classrooms. This one is completely made of wood, a platform suspended over a dry lake, painted brown. The floor was made up of planks, just like the walls. We were received by two teachers and they made us pass. There would be about 50 students in total, from 3 to 8 years old. The children crowded in the window to see us, with huge eyes, watching us closely. In the first classroom the teacher had left, so we took the opportunity to sneak in and greet the children. They were about 8 years old, and as they were already smiling, we started playing the fool, pointing out the words written in Cambodian on the blackboard and making them repeat them aloud …

Everyone entered the game, while we made gestures of approval comically, laughed, and began to play with us. They were very grateful! Any comic gesture we made laughed out loud !! They loved it, when we left the class we were already playing hide-and-seek and walking silently, they all kept going at the same rhythm, until one broke into laughter and became uncontrolled … very funny. Suddenly, the teachers began to organize the children, taking them out of class to be seated in the place where we would act. And we went to prepare for the show … with this audience the fun was assured.

DSC_1149DSC_1154

The children were impatient, so we had to leave now !!! And so we did … we went out and they started to laugh …

The wooden floor, the wooden bench, the decoration were the rice fields … an idyllic theater!

precious, accompanied by the song of the birds … And a giant smiles public … Soon after asking for volunteers, I knew that they would lend themselves quickly to the game … And so it was, we could share together the whole imaginary of the number, laughing together and falling in love together … What a love of children!

And we left the same way we arrived, back to Battambang full of hope and with the heart stolen by these beautiful and funny people … See you soon!

Phare Ponleu Selpak, a great committed social circus

We arrived in Battambang after having seen the Phare circus show in Siem Reap. We are very excited and a little nervous with the idea of teaching in a circus school, designed to train professionals who will soon be on stages around the world showing their talent and skills!

After several email conversations, we met with the assistant director of the center to discuss how we can help. First of all, he himself makes a tour of the school, and half a tour, for an urgent matter, he is replaced by one of the founders … What an honor! What a thrill!!!!

IMG_20170601_100704

IMG_20170601_100710

Phare Ponleu Selpak started in 1986 in the refugee camp II of the Cambodian-Thai border, after the Khmer Rouge of Pol Pot carnage. In these fields, nine young Cambodians began to receive drawing classes from Veronique Decrop, a French humanitarian worker.

IMG_20170617_121411IMG_20170617_121343

These sessions became the perfect therapy for children to express their emotions and release their burden a bit … In 1994, this group of young people organized again in Battambang, one of the cities hardest hit by decades of civil war , to create Phare Ponleu Selpak, and thus help the large number of children victims of poverty and abuse, in a deep post-war society, after a bloody civil war, and in a reconstruction country victim of the corruption of your government.

IMG_20170601_115410

IMG_20170616_175702

The organization started with drawing classes in a building and was growing, including more artistic disciplines, incorporating a circus school, and even today, where seven different disciplines are taught. In addition, his mission is to recover his artistic roots eradicated by the civil war.

During the tour they explain that there is an elementary school, kindergarten, circus school, audio-visuals: video editing, recording, etc … traditional Cambodian dances, theater, painting, and any plastic art that happen to you, the music school, like a great classic local hut.

The building of trapeze, acrobatics and juggling, with a ceiling of about 20 meters high, all the equipment necessary to perform any physical demonstration in trapeze or on ground …. and what if we saw it! The theater space, with tiers and roof similar to acrobatics, the dance and theater classrooms. And finally we saw the circus tent, where the final year students finalize their experience and professionalism, before becoming professionals in the circus of Siem Reap. In the school there are also performances every Monday and Thursday at 7 pm, combining several shows in preparation.

IMG_20170615_202221IMG_20170615_202048

And get to work!!!! We met with the head of studies to plan the workshop. He tells us that we will have about 13 students, from 15 to 20 years old, some with experience as a circus Clown. We discussed the best option, a first idea: an intensive 4 hours a day, 4 days a week, 2 weeks. Ideal to make a good introduction to several aspects of our clown, but we thought it would be a little beast … better start softer, 2 hours the first week and we would see the second … How exciting!

IMG_20170608_102211

We started classes, at 9 am, and they directed us to the circus tent to do the classes !! What a beautiful place … magical! The students begin to arrive and we are going to present ourselves … And the party starts !!

19105578_1340554279358172_6548963114224790000_n

The students, as good teenagers, at first were a little scattered, they were talking to each other, the normal thing, while Him, the head of studies, translated us, and from time to time he put them a bit in Cambodian …

IMG_20170608_100152

We started with basic exercises, confidence, group cohesion, and each time we were complicating a little more. The evolution was beautiful, the initial distance was decreasing, each time we got more confidence (them and us), began to show affection, the desire to learn, interest, the interaction of the group, the desire to improve, to be more they, letting themselves be carried away more by their desire to see people laugh, feel, share …

IMG_20170609_093029IMG_20170607_095353IMG_20170606_105006

At the beginning of the second week we could do the warm ups fully coordinated, we even changed exercise with a single gesture, all to one, focused and motivated … giving everything!

IMG_20170606_103905

When planning the workshop with the Phare staff, we committed ourselves to make a sample of the end of the workshop, so at the end of the first week we had to start giving shape to the sample … the nerves were beginning … The show was going to represent for all the staff of the school … without pressure, hehehehehe … So we decided that the remaining days we would do 4 hours … to work to the fullest …

IMG_20170608_102426

IMG_20170609_103316IMG_20170609_10251219029573_1340554152691518_3902212348537881408_n18921815_1340554259358174_928335248088793049_n18922001_1340557632691170_668735915543304628_n

During the second week we did some more improvisation exercises, until we had enough material to define among all the content of the final sample with a minimum coherence (artistic) … the proposal was colorful and everyone would participate equally. In the afternoon we were translated by Vanara, a school diabolo teacher, who had also done some Clown. He offered to make a bond between the different numbers, so great, we would go for pearls!

IMG_20170614_10450219059620_1340554369358163_6984714583258591401_n

So the second week was intense and laborious. The students were nervous and overturned, willing. We missed all of her many hours, in class and generating ideas, until finally we got a sample … we just needed to take her to the stage …

IMG_20170601_184950

The day of the show: class in the morning and first general rehearsal in the afternoon, just before the performance … there was no more time … To have your full attention, since they were nervous and scattered, we reviewed the movements of three in three, total attention, a bag, clear and simple directions, changes of integrated stage and very basic, and some indication from the stands to nail movements that there was no time to rehearse …

With the music ready, everything ready and the stands ready … Start the show !!!! All the children of the school were there to see their heroes, the great ones, the final year students, who had even seen acting … We were half crap … with so little time to prepare, a rather short workshop, although intense, yes, it was clear that it was a “work in progress”.

19224924_1348340005246266_8388785565712928909_n19146175_1348339825246284_6771580951509747618_n

The assistant director comes out to present, they call us to co-present and explain our project, we summarize the work done with the students and we clear the scene … The actors’ shout is heard as a group, the stage lights fall and it lights up the stage … Action! The first student appears … people start to laugh … they are doing better than ever, super fun, the second one comes out, but how natural! I had not shown this in class !! The enchanted public!

All appear, everything goes like a silk, concentrated, very thin, liking, and liking the public … spectacular! Everything is perfect, in every way! They had a great time, they enjoyed it during the whole show, and in the end … a great public obación! A success! Very well resolved! Altogether lasted about 40 minutes, perfect!

19146009_1348339621912971_4234347358542140644_n

After their performance we made our Clown number, although the children had already seen their idols and most did not wait to see what it was. We prepared in 5 minutes, after being 200% with the students, we got dressed and started playing the music that gave my entrance … We were in a circus tent, with the bleachers full, the space invited the game, share our emotion, to enjoy like the children we are and to give everything for the audience that was watching us …

19264077_10154856620533195_1878293242_o19264035_10154856619258195_500418071_o19238402_10154856620183195_2122307675_o19238308_10154856619878195_1846193704_o19349370_10154856620078195_1186535901_o19359162_10154856620593195_758547895_o19340059_10154856620613195_403780603_o

It was very beautiful, with a captivating heat we show all our interior, our desire to share and our love for what we do … The world is very big, and its people very diverse, but at the same time we all have a common base, all we love, we suffer, we long, and we share. The communication through the clown is universal, and that gives us wings to play and connect with people from all over, with diverse reactions, but all of them included …

IMG-20170618-WA0010IMG-20170618-WA0009

And so our experience with the Phare social circus Ponleu Solpek ended, after more than two weeks in the fantastic city of Battambang, leaving a star shining in our heart, forever … what a beautiful sharing and so receiving … We will return to See you succeed!

Ecole Maternelle Champa-Lao, so cute!!!

Through Angelique, the contact with which we worked for Enfants du Mekong, we spoke with the Champa-Lao children’s school. It is a small school run by the Sisters of Charity of Laos that serves as a nursery.

IMG_20170505_095829-001

This nursery takes care of all children, whether or not they have resources, so those who do not have do not pay, which is a good portion of them. The age of the children is between 1 and 3 years … can you imagine? They are ultra-cute, not the following …

P1040784

We arrived at the school and Angelique welcomed us with sister Latsamy, a Laotian woman who also spoke Italian so we could communicate well. The school consists of two buildings separated by a roof that covers an intermediate courtyard. The children were in one of the great classrooms, and you can imagine, 40 children from 1 to 3 years old, playing, crying, crawling, chasing a sister, until we entered the room … there was silence, the stares fixed on us, the jaws were dislodged, with some chorus of saliva escaping from the side … as educated people we are we told them: Sabaideeee !!!! and all in chorus responded the same.

P1040786

They continued to stare at us, with the utmost curiosity, the scene was tense … dried bushes rolled past the room, suddenly an uncontrolled nervous cry rang out, we had to do something, something great, original and incredible, we hid behind the door and looked out head to then hide again … how good we are … the laughter began to appear, every time we poked our heads a roar of surprise and laughter echoed through the room, in growing, we hid, we went to silence, we looked out and they fell apart in laughter … everyone was ready for the show !!!!

P1040797

We went to prepare, we had to go fast so that the crowd would not get out of hand … Once ready, the number began. The children were delighted, with the most open looks I have seen, willing to have a good time. At each movement, expression, rise in tone, they received it and laughed.

P1040826

P1040857

P1040809

The interaction with the public was more abundant than ever, he wanted to play with us, but the best thing was that he also wanted us to follow the number, not to stop, so they helped us and everything was easy.

P1040940P1040848P1050021

They had a great time and we enjoyed it every moment! Imagine such small children, shouting with us, laughing, participating, than enjoying the public !! And what monkeys !!!! The most dedicated and the most timid, all were to eat them …

P1040859P1040810P1040803P1040873

To finish the show, as always, we went where we had come, with a last look and a sigh … when they disappeared, there was applause, shouts and laughter, and a crowd of children approaching! Hahahahaha … they wanted more and they joined us behind the scenes to play !!

P1050038P1050043P1050047

When leaving, the children were already eating, so we stayed to help feed them … they were left with dumbfounded faces !!!! And again to play!

IMG_20170505_112212IMG_20170505_112204

What a pleasure to have this audience that the clown has to learn, what freshness, sincerity and desire to share and enjoy … in this life play!
